Social Media and Social Change

I’ve been thinking lately about social media and about how to communicate NCRP’s messages in the most powerful ways. This is not my area of expertise – I often prefer old fashioned, face-to-face, one-on-one conversations. (Perhaps my years as a community organizer show through here.)

But I absolutely loved a video message put out recently by Tides to promote their upcoming Momentum conference. The conference will bring together 300+ donors, funders, activists, and progressive thought leaders, including Ben Jealous of the NAACP, Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins of Green for All, and Ali Noorani from the National Immigration Forum.

The video is a challenge to Stephen Colbert to attend Momentum. I couldn’t stop laughing. If I didn’t have a schedule conflict, it would have gotten me to register.

What are your favorite examples of the effective use of social media to advance issues of fairness and justice?

If you are interested in attending Momentum and need a discount, Tides has offered a $150 discount to members and friends of NCRP. Use the code NCRPPARTNER when you register. And then try to connect at the conference with NCRP’s field director Melissa Johnson, and board members Bob Edgar (Common Cause) and Priscilla Hung (Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training).

  • I just received your Summer 2009 email post, and immediately sent an email to Yna. It would be so much easier for me to share your incredible information if I could be a Facebook fan. I cheer you on to dip your toes into social media. Ever for 'a little old lady from Pasadena' like me, it's the best way!
