Over the past four years, conservative policy organizations not only pushed through massive tax cuts that have pushed the budget deficit to untold heights and threatened massive cutbacks in federal discretionary spending, but they, and their foundation supporters, have reenergized efforts to enforce backwards-looking social policies, most notably attacks on civil rights, gay and lesbian marriages, and affirmative action—leading NCRP to revive its research on conservative foundations and publish Axis of Ideology: Conservative Foundations and Public Policy. In Axis of Ideology, NCRP researched the practices of conservative public policy advocacy grantmaking of 79 foundations at the national and state levels. Our work has been cited in many major publications, and staff members have conducted briefings nationwide discussing the publication and its impact.

Following Axis’s release in 2005, we published Funding the Culture Wars: Philanthropy, Church and State, a report on evangelical conservative grantmaking which details the strong connections between an increasing political evangelical community and their strategic conservative funding that fuels their endeavors and puts them at the forefront of American politics.
