Challenging grantmakers to strengthen communities
For more than 35 years, the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP) has served as the country's only independent watchdog of foundations. We are helping foundations understand the benefits of addressing the needs of underserved communities and empowering them through advocacy and community engagement. As a result, more grantmakers are adopting these high impact strategies and our society is better because of it.
At NCRP, we envision a fair, just, and democratic society where the common good is a high priority; where a robust public sector protects, preserves and extends the public interest; where a vital non-profit sector provides a voice to those most in need; and were all people enjoy equality of opportunity, access and fair treatment.
Nearly 100,000 grantmaking institutions control hundreds of billions of dollars and enjoy generous preferential tax treatment. We work to ensure that those dollars are doing the greatest good.
- Are philanthropic assets serving the public good and not private interests?
- Do foundations employ grantmkaing practices that effectively help nonprofits achieve their missions?
- Are philanthropic institutions strengthening democracy by responding to the needs of those with the least wealth, opportunity and power?
We envision philanthropy at its best contributing to this vision of society by operating with the highest standards of integrity and openness, and by investing in people and communities with the least wealth and opportunity through the nonprofit organizations that serve and represent them.
A History of Impact
Since 1976, our research and campaigns have contributed to vital improvements in the philanthropic sector:
- Led the fight to get foundations to publish annual reports. Now most foundations are significantly more transparent than they were in years past.
- Challenged United Way's monopoly on workplace giving. There are now many alternative funds that focus on social justice, and United Way itself is supporting more advocacy efforts.
- Contested the Combined Federal Campaign's ban on advocacy organizations. Nonprofits that engage in public advocacy work now receive more than $50 million annually from federal employees through the CFC collection.
- Helped define social justice philanthropy and continue to influence the structure and direction of social justice giving.
- Highlighted the effectiveness of conservative foundation support for public policy, influencing mainstream and liberal grantmakers to be more strategic in pursuit of their goals.
