National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy Launches 'Philanthropy's Promise' Campaign

The D.C.-based National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy has announced a new initiative to encourage leading U.S. foundations to dedicate a majority of their grant dollars to underserved communities and a significant amount to strategies that address the root causes of social problems.
More than sixty leading foundations responsible for close to $2.5 billion a year in grants have already signed on to the Philanthropy's Promise campaign, which calls on them to allocate at least 50 percent of their grant dollars to the needs of marginalized groups such as the poor, elderly, and disabled, and at least 25 percent to advocacy, community organizing, and civic engagement efforts that promote equity, opportunity, and justice. Foundations that have posted statements explaining their support for the initiative include the Conrad N. Hilton, Ford, McKnight, Northwest Area, and W.K. Kellogg foundations.
