Winter 2006 Responsive Philanthropy Released
Gingrich as Keynote at COF Conference, Strategies from the Right, and Abramoff's Unanswered Questions

The Council on Foundations is taking a step at the upcoming annual conference to include conservative viewpoints, but perhaps in the wrong way: former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich will be the keynote speaker. Rick Cohen, executive director of NCRP, looks back at Gingrich's philanthropic record and the message the sector may be sending as a result in, "Gingrich and His Philanthropy: The Wrong Signal for the Sector and Accountability."

Other articles in the winter 2006 Responsive Philanthropy are as follows:

  • "Abramoff: More Unanswered Questions," an editorial by Rick Cohen, executive director of NCRP, asks the questions that somehow, despite the prosecution of Jack Abramoff earlier this year, are still left unanswered. Is the IRS prepared to prevent other lobbyists from stealing tax dollars and swaying politicians?
  • "Defining Values & Freedom: How the Right's Perspectives and Strategies Win," remarks made by Jeff Krehely, deputy director of NCRP, at the Hudson Institute regarding John Miller's A Gift of Freedom and the history of the Olin Foundation. Krehely asks important questions in this piece about the future of charity in the US and the direction in which philanthropy is potentially headed.
