Recommendations for Reform of the Philanthropic Sector to be Presented by NCRP at House Briefing
New report exposing top corporate executives who have been indicted of fraud or crime and continue to serve on foundation boards also to be released
WASHINGTON-NCRP recommendations presented last week to the Senate for higher accountability standards and tighter government oversight of the philanthropic sector will be presented to the House of Representatives tomorrow by Rick Cohen, executive director of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP). NCRP will also release a report detailing how corporate scandalmongers continue to be entrusted to sit on foundation boards-a perfectly legal matter under existing law, but a disturbing pattern when considering the vast amount of public money and trust placed in foundations.

NCRP's accountability standards serve three key goals-restore public confidence in charitable institutions; strengthen the nonprofit sector's ability to serve and represent the people who are most in need in society; and end the many misuses and abuses of philanthropy that have been recently highlighted in the press.

This briefing to House of Representatives staff follows closely after the House Committee on Ways and Means held the first of a series of hearings on tax-exemption status the same day that the Senate Committee on Finance held its hearing on charity oversight last week. NCRP continues to advocate for reforms of the sector, as regular media coverage of excessive foundation executive and trustee compensation, the outright failures of foundation self-regulation, weak government oversight, and dubious recent entanglements between foundations and political figures and causes have all contributed to low levels of public trust in the sector, as well as the sector's inability to effectively and credibly serve the public.
