Through its research, NCRP examines who benefits from philanthropy and encourages increased funding for lower income communities, communities of color and other marginalized groups. We especially encourage funding for activities that promote structural change – activities like community organizing, advocacy and civic engagement. Our agenda includes:

Documenting the impact of groups working for social, racial and economic justice and the foundations that support them;

Conducting new research on the challenges for inner city and rural groups in accessing sufficient philanthropic capital;

Publishing new reports on the status of social action and environmental funds in workplace fundraising campaigns and focusing on an analysis of the organizations benefiting from alternative funds and federations; and,
-
Maintaining and updating a database of domestic funders' networks committed to promoting social justice.
In August 2007, NCRP released Rural Philanthropy: Building Dialogue From Within, which aims to get more philanthropic funds into the hands of rural people and places. NCRP convened focus groups in rural areas in five states in February, March, and April 2007. These areas included eastern Kentucky, southern Miami-Dade county in Florida, western Texas' border with Mexico, Montana, and northern California. NCRP used these focus groups to discuss various strategies that both rural nonprofits and foundations can promote to increase philanthropy in rural places.
NCRP is currently conducting research in different parts of the country on how investing in advocacy, community organizing and civic engagement can lead to sustainable social change. The first report will be available in Fall 2008.
