What’s Next For DACA?
June 26, 2020
NCRP is co-sponsoring “What’s Next for DACA?,” a webinar led by Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR). On June 18, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the White House’s attempt to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Had the effort been allowed to move forward, more than 650,000 DACA holders would have been at risk of losing their work authorizations and legal status, a particularly worrisome proposition given U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s stated intent to deport these individuals if the program were struck down. While the Supreme Court’s decision provided a hard-won reprieve, the technical grounds on which DACA was preserved leaves the door open to future attempts to roll back the program — something the president hinted at following the ruling. Against the backdrop of a pandemic and an increasingly acrimonious election landscape, what will advocates and service providers prioritize in the coming months? Join us for a discussion with leaders in the field who will unpack the Supreme Court’s ruling, share their advocacy and service priorities, and illuminate ways for philanthropy to support the immigrant rights movement in the battles that lie ahead.
